How a tankless unit heats water
A tankless water heater heats water as it passes through a heat exchanger, rather than storing hot water in a tank. A gas burner or electric element fires only when a hot tap opens.
That on-demand operation is why tankless units avoid the standby heat loss a tank carries all day, and why sizing matters: the unit must handle the flow of every fixture running at once.
